A Warm Spot

I happened to glance out the basement door and saw Lightening keeping warm.
It constantly amazes me how he finds warm places to hang out. He will spend all day outside. The other day Jared found him sleeping in the hay bales. When he came in for the night his little ears were barely cold and he smelled sweet....like hay. He also has a habit of losing his collar with tag so now he is wearing a heart tag because I didn't want to make a special trip to Petsmart to get him his little fishy tag. We are thinking about making him Shrinky Dink tags so we don't have to blow 5 bucks for an engraved tag. Who knows where he loses them.
 He lives a mysterious life.

Pals

Jasper is fascinated by the cats, but Thunder is really the only one who will put up with him herding her around the house or sticking his face in hers.
Jasper truly loves them.
And Thunder is tolerant....until I saw her sit next to him at the window.
Now I think she finds a friend in him as well.

Sibling Rivalry

I caught Lightening trying to curl up on a washcloth that was sitting on the bench in the kitchen so I brought in their basket from the garage that has a little kid sleeping bag in it.
He instantly curled up in it and spent the day in it.
Oh the life of a cat....
All went well until Thunder wanted in.
They don't always act like they love each other.
Well....now we have two baskets on the bench in the kitchen.
Hmmm.....I wonder why?

Our Garden in Full Swing

I love this time of year when our garden is in and becoming productive.
So far we have frozen 5 gallons of greenbeans,
50 + quart bags of corn,
about 15 quarts of canned pickles,
and have decreased our food bill by about 30 dollars in produce each week...
Maybe even more!
Whenever I'm out in the yard, this guy, Lightning, comes out of nowhere to visit and hang around my feet. He's great at catching voles, mice, grasshoppers, dragon flies and pounces on just about anything from leaves to dried corn husks.
 My favorite!
We have 8 ft corn again this year. Gotta plant the sunflowers....
This year we have thrown grass clippings along the walk ways of the garden.
It has done an awesome job of keeping all those nasty weeds out.
 My gardening pal.
Thunder was in the corn earlier jumping up into the stalks to catch grasshoppers.
It sounded like a deer was in the corn thrashing about....
nope, just a cat.
In fact, the deer have only been in the garden twice this year early in the summer.
What a relief to not have them mow the greenbeans down to the nubs.
Probably why we got 5 gallons this year!

Thunder's Nap

This crazy kitten cracks us up almost every day.
Say "that" 10 times fast.
Thunder will seek out someone almost every day so you can hold her while she takes her nap.
She literally wanted in Daphne's arms and immediately snuggled in for her nap.
We don't mind, if there is a book nearby to read.....

All in one Day

Daisy is Nana and Poppa's new puppy. She is chihuahua, jack Russel terrier and we are pretty sure Papillon too because she has the little butterfly ears.
Victoria and I were helping Nana cut grass out for a new flower bed and Daisy was under foot finding all kinds of things to do.
Watching Victoria throw chunks of sod into the trailer was like watching her ice skate.
With each toss she flung her leg out like a waltz jump.
It seems like every day we work from sun up to sun down. For the past 8 weeks we have spent hours on end reinforcing goat fencing. I think we have the Evil Elf completely contained only to have Mr. Peabody....Jacks, to push his way through the fencing to the neighbors weeds. I guess theirs look tastier than ours.
Now we are working hard on the garden. Year after year we try to support our tomatoes only to have them fall over due to the weight no matter what contraption we use to hold them up.
This year we have ....wait, I showed Kirk a picture of structure to hold tomatoes and he built this awesome tomatoe trellis. I found these awesome clips on Amazon and bought 6,500 ft of tomatoe string pretty cheap on Amazon too. Kirk and I were stringing them up last night only to have a little helper try to take off with our twine. Sometimes our lives are taking a step forward only to take two back. It's a good thing we aren't quitters.
Lightening was sure that he could walk off with the twine. We had to work at it to get it back. He is really quick for a little cat.
I love that when ever we are out in the yard our little helpers come out of who knows where to see what is up. No sooner did we get Lightening down from sabotaging our efforts, Thunder appeared and was trying to think up what she could get into.
When Lightening wants to cuddle and be pet by you he wants it when he wants it. He doesn't care if you are busy doing something.
 Isn't this beautiful?
I really think this is going to work this time.
This is why there isn't any food in the house ever! It's because of him.....or him!!!
Last I looked he had the cereal box.
Which I am sure is officially empty now.
Thunder loves to accept the next challenge...even if it's walking on the water irrigation pipe...or maybe it's to keep her feet from getting wet.

Checking Bees

I'm really proud of the boys that they have taken on raising bees. They have really become proficient in reading the frames. Their hive has doubled in size since they started 5 weeks ago.
Each week they garb up in rain pants, long gloves and beekeeper hats to inspect the hive and replenish their sugar water supply which they will do until they put on the super to make honey.
It is amazing to see the frames fill up with honey, larva, or pollen.
They don't call them Busy Bees for nothing.
Thunder decided to lay under the hive while the boys inspected the hive.
Unfortunately she caught a bee and it stung her in the mouth....dummy.
She ran around in circles and then laid under the tree to cool off.
Lightening thought it would be awesome to pounce his sister in the cool tall grass.....
 These kittens are so sweet.
They are always ready for lovin'....even with muddy feet!

Toby

This has been a very sad week. We had to put our sweet Toby down last week. He was 17 1/2 years old and has been dwindling due to old age. Who would have thought that this huge cat that weighed 19 pounds would become a frail old man with stiff hips. His last couple days we spent almost every minute with him. We thought he would just give up over the weekend but he didn't. He just kept hanging in there. He continued to sleep with us with my hand on his side so he knew we were still there for him. If he thought he was alone he would meow out until I touched him. So sad. And with every little touch I made, he purred a faint purr.
He has been such a huge part of our lives. I went to Target one night in Phoenix(1996) and came home with a kitten. I did double check with Kirk. and called from a pay phone....Actually, it was more like a warning. We had recently put down a cat due to old age (she was 16) and our 18 yo Siamese was extremely depressed. She perked up as soon as she saw Toby. Someone for her to take care of. And she did exactly that and lived another two years until she was 20 years old!  He was the sweetest cat but extremely possessive of me. That was kind of wierd. As he aged he improved his behavior. I was always worried that he would smother the kids when they were babies. He was so big. He equaled their size and outweighed them at times. But he was always gentle and well loved.
We miss Toby.
We miss him laying all over the kids school books so they can't write on their papers.
We miss him lying across our laps while sewing.
I miss him pulling out all the straight pins from my pin cushion only to return to it and what appears to have been a pin explosion.
I miss him removing the pins in a pattern as fast as I am putting them in.
I miss him sitting on my lap while I am cross stitching and grabbing the embroidery floss as it is being pulled through the cloth.
I miss him playing with the yarn, the curly ribbon, the elastic, the string.....
We miss the time he took an entire skein of yarn and twined it under the kitchen table between all the legs during an afternoon of partying while we were away.
We don't miss the time he found Jared's rubber snake that he had just gotton from the zoo and chewed it up into pieces, leaving it on the floor. It looked disturbing because it looked real.
We don't miss the numerous barbie feet that he chewed off leaving the bendable filament sticking out from the ankles.....that looked gross too. We finally learned to not leave rubbery things out.
We miss him sitting in the high chair,
licking baby food off the tray, the baby's face, bib, hands.....he loved baby food. Loved, loved it.
He loved chewing on the girls little christmas tree that they had in their room for their dolls. They don't miss that. It was annoying.
We don't miss him finding ways to be close to the streamers. He had a thing for crepe paper too.
He had spent years drinking out of the goldfish bowl and even recently. Victoria was so afraid that he was going to eat her goldfish, Silly. He never did. I think the fish misses him too.
One time Jared saw me kiss Toby on the head when he was a baby. So he walked right over to him and licked his side. He came to me with his wet slobbery mouth, wide open with tons of fur stuck inside and outside his mouth. He never did that again.
Another time, Jared only knew how to crawl and was heckling Toby. He chased Toby out of the room as fast as his little hands and legs would go. All of a sudden he came crawling back into the room at the same speed with Toby attached to his back, nails included. I will never forget that. Jared didn't even cry. To him, Toby was a playmate.
We will all miss Toby.
And I know he loved us to the very last second.
I feel relieved that he is comfortable and at peace.

Old Man

Toby will be 17 in a few months......
that makes him 119 years old in cat years.
He has lost quite a bit of weight this year but remains massive in comparison to other cats....especially Mattie.
I'm surprised he isn't needing a walker or a cane.
He definately has spunk when he takes on Henry.
It probably keeps him young.

Pheasant Pholly

This spring has brought a pheasant in the field behind our house.
I love to lose myself out the window, watching whatever wildlife comes prowling around.
This pheasant has taken up residence in the field and
has a girlfriend that he tries to impress daily.
He makes his rounds of the field in the late afternoon,
scrounging up whatever grub he eats....
crowing like a rooster in the early morning,
and......
 Hmmm.
He has caught the eye of Kevin.
He's getting closer.
I wonder if Kevin really thinks he has a chance
at catching a bird that probably out weighs him.
Maybe he just wanted a closer look.

Meet Kevin

This is Kevin.
Atleast, that is what his tag says,  he answers to it.  But then again I think he will answer to just about anything. He lives near the library.  His tag says that too.
He is the neighborhood Cat.
He seems to be everyones cat.
He has to be the most social cat since our neighborhood cat named Sunshine, in Phoenix.  I will be washing dishes and will watch him greet all the people coming and going in the library parking lot. He just mosies through the lot between the parked cars.
He never seems to be in any hurry or concerned that he will be hit by a car.
He must just knows that either he won't get hit or he must have plenty of his nine lives left at his disposable.
He was even out there in a blizzard with not a care in the world.

O Come All Ye Wakeful

O Come All Ye Wakeful
sing to:  O Come All Ye Faithful

O come all ye wakeful
Find a nice location
A warm knee, a settee
Relax in the sun
Sleep on your sweater
Though your coat is better

Refrain:  O let us yawn and snore some
Keeping one eye open
O let us yawn and snore some
Ou-r reward

O come and be gracious
Your bed is so spacious
O choose well and snooze well
And don't make a fuss
Sofa and armchair
Cover them with shed hair

Refrain

O sleep where you're able
Bookshelf or a table
A good nap on broad lap
Will serve just as well
Life has such meaning
Paws in air and dreaming

Refrain
They look all cozy and cute with their little eyes tightly shut.
All cuddled together.

Christmas Cat

Toby is a pretty cat...and huge. He looks a little dorky wearing a red ribbon.
Not too masculine.
But it made Daphne happy.
Atleast she didn't make him wear baby clothes like she did when they were little.
